Why Read Other People Stories?
Reading how others have lived and overcome adversity is a great motivater. Other people can
inspire us with their stories of hope, courage and wisdom. Have you ever heard the saying "put yourself in my
shoes"? or "walk a mile in my shoes"? Through story telling, we are doing just that. We go for the ride and
"put ourselves in their shoes", and by doing so we are empowered, encouraged and given faith to believe in
ourselves.
So, if you think you might benefit from a little "believing in yourself" then we would like to
encourage you to browse through some of the resources we are recommending. We hope you enjoy the journey.
Patrick Wayne Swayze
Patrick Wayne Swayze (pronounced
"Sweizi":August 18, 1952 – September 14, 2009)was an American actor,
dancer and singer - songwriter. He was best-known for his roles as romantic leading men in the films Dirty
Dancing and Ghost and as Orry Main in the North and South side television miniseries. He was
named by People magazine as its "Sexiest Man Alive" in 1991.
Diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer in January 2008, Swayze told Barbara Walters a year
later that he was "kicking it".However, he died from the disease on September 14, 2009.His last role was the lead
in an ill-fated A&E TV series, The Beast, which premiered on January 15, 2009. Due to a prolonged decline in
health, Swayze was unable to promote the series. On June 15, 2009,Entertainment Tonight announced that the show has

A behind-the-scenes look at a Hollywood life and a remarkable love, this memoir is both
entertainment and inspiration. Patrick and Lisa's marriage is a journey of two lives intertwined and lived as
one--throughout their years in Hollywood and at home on their working ranch outside Los Angeles, and culminating in
the hope and wisdom they've imparted to all who know them. This book will open the door for families, individuals,
and husbands and wives to grow, bond and discover entirely new levels of love and sharing, proving that life
shouldn't be lived as a series of endings, but rather as the beginning of greater strength and love.
An Independent Book Review
I could not put it down, September 30, 2009
By Bostonian
If you ever wanted to get to know Patrick Swayze better, read this book. He takes us through his
childhood, including stories of being beaten up in school because he was a ballet dancer. To look more macho,
Patrick took up football. This had disastrous consequences and on Halloween night in 1970, Patrick's knee was
destroyed in a football game. He fought his way back through tremendous pain, but this injury inevitably destroyed
his hopes of becoming an Olympic gymnast and a professional ballet dancer. He refused to let these disappointments
stop him, and worked on becoming an actor. At one point, Patrick and Lisa were completely broke. If it were not for
an orange tree in the backyard of their apartment complex, they would not have had anything to eat. Patrick also
tells of the tragedies in his life which include losing his father to a heart attack at age 57, losing his older
sister to suicide in 1994, and losing their baby boy in the third month of pregnancy. Much of this book focuses on
his career. He and Lisa did not originally like the Dirty Dancing script, but they made changes to it and really
liked the finished product. There were also stories of how he and Jennifer Grey did not initially get along. What
puzzled me was that even after Patrick achieved fame and fortune, he still struggled with depression. Although he
was enormously talented, he felt inadequate. Working cheered him up, but he would get depressed when the filming
was over. He worried a lot about being taken seriously as an actor, and about future roles. Drinking was his way of
dealing with it, and that caused problems in his marriage. There was not too much focus on the cancer. He was so
determined to beat it on some days, and was too tired on other days. One thing that rings true in this book is that
Patrick and Lisa were soul mates who truly needed each other. Patrick was a great guy, and everyone will miss him.
Rest in peace, Patrick.
