Self Defence
This section is about physical self defence, who are we defending ourselves from, who to contact
to learn real self defence what does the law say.
The 4selfdefence website is primarily about self defence meaning defending ourselves from injury
by taking security measures that will make our lives safe at home, while traveling, during leisure time and at work
and then when that fails know simple, yet effective self-defense that will protect you and your family in
a life threatening situation.
Physical self defence is something we should not have to use, however it is common to read where
a person has been attacked, robbed, sexually assaulted or even killed. People have been injured or killed when
coming to the aid of a person who is being attacked. See good Samaritan Attacked and good Samaritan killed.
Could you defend yourself or would you know what to do if you or some one you care about was
randomly attacked by a stranger or some one you know? If you or some one you know was to be attacked could
you defend yourself or them without getting yourself injured?
A big part of self defence is in your mind. Self-defense is about doing whatever is necessary to
stop another person from hurting you or some one else. Self defense is about knowing when and how to protect
yourself or some one you care about if attacked. A great book on setting your mind for self defence is the Three
Second Fighter by Geoff Thompson
Everybody has a right to remain safe, if you or some one you care about is attacked you have the
right to defend yourself and any other person who’s health or life is in danger because some one has chose to
attack you or some one else.
I am not talking about attacking some one because they have yelled, made gestures or embarrassed
you, if this is the case walk away.
We are talking about what we have to do to stop someone from hurting you or someone you care
about. The other person made a choice to hurt you. You have the right to do whatever to stop the
threat.
Choosing a self defence class
Self defence classes should provide avoidance options, have simple easy to learn techniques as
you don't have to be an athlete to be defend yourself.
Legal use of force and the law
All countries, states and territories have different interpretations of laws concerning the
use of force; you should research the use of force applicable in your state or country.
Uses of force considerations in NSW, Australia are:
In any circumstances where you are threatened or attacked, you should decide whether the use of
any force is reasonably necessary.
In circumstances where the use of force is reasonably necessary, you should use the minimal amount of force
required to stop the threat. Once the threat has been stopped you should retreat to a safer environment.
You must ensure that you do not use excessive force and in particular do not use:
-
Any force where none is needed;
-
More force than is needed; and
-
Any force or a greater level of force after the necessity for it has ended.
The point isn't to hurt the other person, destroy him, or make him suffer.
(It is important that you remember this if you hurt someone while
protecting yourself or someone else, you must tell any representative of the law that you were stopping the
threat and that what you did was because you felt that your life or someone elses life was in
danger). The object is to stop them from hurting you with a minimum of effort and maximum effect
and a minimum of danger to you and other people you care about.
Many styles of martial arts are practiced for self defence or include self defence techniques.
Many Martial arts are great as a sport and are great for developing friendships and fitness, for propper self
defence you should find a style that has practicle and easy to learn techniques for self defence.
Some countries allow weapons to be carried for self defence, this is not the case in Australia
so i believe that it is imperative that everyone learn simple self defence techniques that can be used in
every situation.
