Self defence in Sydney
Self Defence should be designed for self defence not sport.
Self-defense is what you do to keep yourself safe, its about choices and taking safe options to
preserve your own safety. When talking about self defence with both females and males they will often tell me
that they could not poke their finger in some one’s eyes because they do not want to hurt them,” stop are you
crazy I am talking about some one who is going to bash, rape or even kill". Realistically you should be thinking
about stopping the person from hurting you or some one you care about not the offender.
A big part of self defence is in your mind. Self-defense is about doing whatever is necessary to
stop another person from hurting you or some one else. Self defense is about knowing when and how to protect
yourself or some one else.
When we are talking about self-defense, we are not talking about picking fights, walking up to
someone who has said something we don’t like or embarrassing us and smashing them. We are talking about doing
what you have to; to stop someone else from hurting you or someone you care about. It isn’t your choice to be
forced to defend yourself. The other person made their choice to hurt you; no one has the right to hurt you in
any way. You do have the right to do whatever is needed to stop them from hurting you.
Sometimes people get attacked, raped, beaten, or murdered by people who deliberately set out to do
so. Lets look at the person who is moving from anti social behavior to those that will move to a physical
attack.
Understand your assailant:
He is possibly bigger and stronger than you, desperate, determined, capable cunning and
dangerous.
If you have something they want, they will take it. Like any predator, they will pick a
target they feel is vulnerable. The longer an assault is prolonged, the better off you are. In order to get what
he wants, the criminal needs to:
a. Get close to you b. Get you alone
Never listen to potential assailants. They will always lie. Note: Boston Strangler and Ted Bundy
had charisma, they were smart and convincing. Your personal space is valuable, don’t give it up. He is cunning.
He will think of ways to get close to you. He will not jump out and yell stick ‘em up.
There are 3 ways that your assailant will try to get close to you.
1. Approach you
2. Have you come to him
3. Use the environment
They will try to catch you off guard; your priority is to avoid these people by using proper
avoidance strategies however if you find yourself in a precarious situation I will give you some simple
techniques that are effective. To truly defend yourself, you need to train, 4selfdefence offers regular self

Simple Techniques for Self-Defense
1) Disclaimer: The following techniques will not work effectively without proper training; you are
encouraged to go to a professional trainer to learn the proper techniques before using them in the real world.
If you practice with a friend do not use full-force and be controlled.
2) 4selfdefence training is very effective: you need to know when to use it; you need to have
the confidence to use it,
3) These techniques are for escape and evasion. There are other things you can do with them, but
the main idea here is to give yourself some room to run, and some time to do it in. These are not for attack.
These are nasty -- that's what makes them work. You do not walk up to someone and just do any of these. These
are for defense.
Standard Strikes, Target areas and Medical implications
There are certain points on the human body where no matter how big you are, how strong you are it
hurts to get hit there. If you poke someone in the eye, in the throat, hit them with a palm strike to the chin,
a strike to the groin, kick them in the front or side or below the knee they will be hurt in some way. By
striking these areas will work on everyone. None of these points are covered by muscle.
Our Primary Target will be Eyes, throat and knees, all other targets are
secondary, and this does not mean we ignore them it just means that if we are in a life or death situation we
will target the most vulnerable parts of the body.
Finger strikes targets are eyes and throat. To perform a finger strike you
should hold your hand flat with the fingers pressed tightly together. The classic technique that everyone would
think of is a jab to the eye. Another target is the jugular notch, which is the small indentation at the base of
the throat, between the two sides of the collar bone
1. Primary target areas: Eyes
2. Secondary target areas:Nil
3. Medical implications: Impair vision, blindness
The knife-hand strike targets are the temple, face, neck, throat, clavicle,
ribs, kidneys, groin, or large muscle groups. The throat strike is especially effective since the knife hand's
narrow profile allows it to slip beneath the chin.
Hold arm straight out in front of the body with hand held flat (palm up) with fingers straight and
together with thumb sticking out.
-
Slightly bend fingers and arch the palm backward.
-
Stiffen fingers to keep them from banging together upon impact.
-
Bend thumb and keep it tucked close to the hand.
-
Striking area is the fleshy part of the outer side of the hand between the base of the little finger
and the wrist.
Keep wrist locked with the hand aligned with the forearm. The point of impact is the fleshy part of
the outer hand, which may be used with great force on a hard surface without injury to the hand. Used in an
outside to inside, inward, palm up, slashing motion or in a downward chopping motion or a forward thrusting
motion. Accurate distancing is essential to avoid striking with the little finger joint or the wrist.
Primary target areas: Throat
Secondary target areas: Nose/ front face
Medical implications: Lethal- fatal crushed wind pipe, Break nose and loosen teeth
Flat hand (strike with middle joint) target is the throat, is especially effective as its narrow profile allows it
to slip beneath the chin. Bend the fingers over at the first joint and tuck your thumb in, the point of impact is
the first joint of your fingers. Drive you flat hand knuckles through the throat.
1. Primary target areas: Throat
2. Secondary target areas:Face and side of the neck.
3. Medical implications: Lethal, fatal crushed wind pipe
Elbow strike targets are the temple, face, neck, throat, clavicle, ribs,
kidneys, or large muscle groups is a strike with the point of the elbow, the part of the forearm nearest to the
elbow, or the part of the upper arm nearest to the elbow. Elbows can be thrown sideways similarly to a hook,
upwards similarly to an uppercut, or downwards with the point of the elbow.
1. Primary target areas: Throat
2. Secondary target areas: Nose/ front face
3. Medical implications: Lethal- fatal crushed wind pipe, Break nose and loosen teeth
Axe kick and leg stamps target the lower leg below the knee. The point of
contact is the arch of the sole of the boot during an axe kick or leg stamp. The arch of the boot will close
around the shinbone directly below the knee joint reducing the risk of sliding off of the target.
Primary target areas: Knee, shin and foot
Secondary target areas:
Medical implications: Pain, ligament damage, dislocation and fracture
Palm Strike Targets are chin, nose, and jaw, ears, back of the head, groin,
kidney and abdominal areas.
Strike the chin or front of the face using the palm of the hand. Whether the hand is open or the
fingertips are folded against the bottom knuckles, palm strikes hit with the bottom part of the palm, where the
hand meets the wrist. Strike straightforward into the chin.
The bottom ridge of the palm is a surprisingly solid striking surface, and can do just as much
damage as a closed fist when utilized properly (some studies have shown that a palm strike actually can produce
more energy then a punch in most cases), with far less risk of injury to the striker's own hand.
The palm strike is useful as it is thrown in a more relaxed manner than a clenched fist. This is
because clenching the fist shortens the extensor muscles of the wrist which counter the action of flexor muscles
of the wrist used in punching. Many martial arts teach to keep the fist clench relaxed until impact in order to
maximize the speed of the punch.
1. Primary target areas: Chin (jab)
2. Secondary target areas: Nose/ front face
3. Medical implications: Fatal neck injury, Knock down, knock out
